How the sum works

Every unit figure in Alcohol-3 comes from the same calculation, applied to the size of the drink and the strength printed on the label.

units = volume (ml) × ABV (%) ÷ 1000

A pint is 568ml. A single measure of spirits is 25ml in Scotland, and 25ml or 35ml in England and Wales. A standard wine bottle is 750ml. Strength varies more than most people expect, so the label is always worth a look.

What the guideline actually says

  • No more than 14 units a week, for men and women alike.
  • Spread over three days or more, rather than saved up for one night.
  • Several drink-free days each week.
  • There is no level of drinking that carries no risk at all. The guideline is where the risk stays low.

Guidance from the UK Chief Medical Officers, which applies across England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.
