Alcohol-3
Future self

Numbers are easy to argue with. A face is harder.

Upload a photograph and Alcohol-3 illustrates the changes that are documented at the level you are actually drinking, applied to your likeness. It is a picture of what sustained drinking tends to do, not a forecast about you, and the page says so plainly.

Units by day

The dashed line marks 2 units a day, the UK guideline of 14 a week spread evenly.

Example data, shown to illustrate the dashboard.

Why this exists

Long-term risk does not feel like anything today

Everything about heavy drinking is deferred. The unit count is abstract, the liver is out of sight, and nothing hurts this week. That gap between what the numbers say and what you feel is the reason people carry on. Seeing it is not a scare tactic so much as an attempt to make a distant thing present.

  • Weekly units mean very little to most people as a figure
  • The visible effects of drinking arrive slowly enough to go unnoticed
  • Health warnings about the next twenty years compete badly with tonight
  • The changes are well documented, but usually shown on strangers

How it works

Using future self

  1. Log for long enough to have a real figure

The illustration is generated from the units you have actually recorded, so it needs a genuine average behind it rather than a guess.

  2. Upload a photograph

A clear, front-facing picture works best. Your photograph is used to make the image and is not kept afterwards.

  3. Choose a horizon

Three, five and ten years are available on Premium. Each is generated from the same drinking level over a longer period.

  4. Keep it or delete it

Illustrations are stored privately in your account and served only to you. You can delete any of them at any time.

What you get

In the app

Based on what you logged

The level of drinking behind the illustration is your own recorded average, not a category you were slotted into.

Three, five and ten years

Separate illustrations at each horizon on Premium, so the difference between them is visible.

Your photograph is not kept

It is used to generate the image and then discarded. The illustration itself is stored on a private store and served only to you.

Delete whenever you want

Any illustration can be removed from your account, and removing it removes the stored file.

Who this helps

What it changes

If the numbers have stopped landing

Plenty of people know their weekly total, can quote the guideline, and carry on regardless. A different form of the same information sometimes gets through where the figure does not.

If you are weighing up whether to change now or later

The difference between the three year and the ten year illustration is the argument for not leaving it.

If you have already cut down

Seeing what the level you left behind was heading towards is a reasonable thing to keep in view.

Being straight with you

This is an illustration, not a prediction about you

It shows changes that are documented at a given level of drinking. It does not know your genetics, your health, your skin, or what you will do next, and it cannot tell you what you will look like. Treat it as a way of picturing a general tendency, not as a medical forecast. Nothing here is a substitute for advice from your GP.

Common questions

What happens to the photograph I upload?

It is used to generate the illustration and is not kept afterwards. The generated image is stored on a private store in your account and served only to you.

Is this a prediction of how I will look?

No. It illustrates changes that are documented at the level of drinking you have logged. It has no knowledge of your genetics or your health and cannot forecast anything about you specifically.

Is future self included in the free account?

The three, five and ten year illustrations are a Premium feature. Everything the illustration is built from, the logging and the units, is free.

Can I delete an illustration?

Yes, at any time, and deleting it removes the stored file as well as the record.

Related features

It starts with knowing the number

The illustration is built from the units you have logged, so the logging comes first. That part is free, and a week of it is enough to see where you stand.
